The Seattle Seahawks will promote defensive line coach Clint Hurtt to defensive coordinator, the Seattle Times and ESPN reported Friday.

Hurtt would replace Ken Norton Jr., whom the Seahawks fired Jan. 18 after four seasons.

Hurtt, 43, coached defensive line at several college programs and spent three years on the Chicago Bears’ staff before coming to Seattle in 2017. Hurtt is also the Seahawks’ assistant head coach under Pete Carroll.

Reports said that the Seahawks were also adding Ed Donatell to a “senior defensive role” on Carroll’s staff. Donatell, 65, spent the past three seasons as defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos and overlapped with Hurtt on Chicago’s staff.

Once known for their vaunted defense led by the “Legion of Boom,” Seattle’s defense has lagged behind in recent years. In 2021, the Seahawks finished 7-10 and allowed 379.1 yards per game, which was 28th in the NFL.
