While the Atlanta Braves are currently viewed as the favorites to re-sign Josh Donaldson, the Minnesota Twins reportedly remain in pursuit of the All-Star third baseman and still have a chance to sign him.
According to KSTP’s Darren Wolfson, Minnesota remains engaged in discussions on Donaldson and both sides are having “nearly daily dialogue” about the possibility of him joining the Twins on a multi-year deal. As of yet, the Twins have reportedly not made him a final offer.
Donaldson is the top free-agent hitter on the market with the Braves, Twins and Washington Nationals still reportedly after him. However, the likelihood of him joining the reigning World Series champions could be dwindling after the team signed Starlin Castro and re-signed Asdrubal Cabrera.
Atlanta signed the star third baseman last offseason to a one-year, $23 million contract and the deal worked out well for both sides. He hit 37 home runs with 94 RBI and a .900 OPS in 155 games and became a valuable member of the clubhouse.
After playing in just 36 games during the 2018 season, Donaldson bet on himself in 2019 and proved he can stay healthy. Now he’s expected to land a four-year deal worth more than $100 million.
If Donaldson signs with the Twins, it’s expected that the team will move Miguel Sano to first base. It’s a switch that would make Minnesota’s lineup significantly better and improve the team’s defense as well.
