Report: Tom Coughlin could join Jaguars’ front office if not hired as HC

It’s looking more and more like Tom Coughlin will be involved with the Jacksonville Jaguars in some capacity next year, either as a head coach or an executive.

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Jaguars are likely to hire Coughlin to a position such as Vice President of Football Operations if he’s not tabbed to replace Gus Bradley as the next head coach.

Hiring Coughlin as an executive¬†would make much more sense than hiring him to coach the team (something that general manager Dave Caldwell said is a possibility), in this scribe’s estimation.

Coughlin is 70-years old. He’s also not an offensive-minded head coach, which is likely what the Jaguars will need, if they want to resurrect Blake Bortles’ failing career. Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has already been pegged as a guy Jacksonville is looking at to fill the role of head coach (more on that here).

Hiring a younger coach who can help the offense blossom should be the first order of business for the Jags. Coughlin still has a sharp mind and is well respected throughout the league. Involving him as an executive would help stabilize this flailing organization while perhaps making the head coaching position even more attractive for guys like Shanahan, Josh McDaniels or Darrell Bevell.
