Report: Spurs sign Rudy Gay to two-year, $17 million contract

The San Antonio Spurs have made their first big splash in free agency, reportedly signing veteran forward Rudy Gay to a two-year, $17 million contract.

Having been linked to the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder, it is somewhat surprising to see Gay land in San Antonio. Though, the Spurs themselves have been in the market for an upgrade after being swept out of the Western Conference Finals by the Golden State Warriors last season.

Gay, 30, averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Sacramento Kings last season before going down with an Achilles injury in mid January. He’s expected to be back on the court by the start of training camp.

It’s not yet known where the Spurs will utilize Gay, but we can expect him to join Kawhi Leonard on the court at times as a stretch four. The veteran hit on 37 percent of his three-point attempts this past season.
