San Diego State has told the Mountain West Conference it is planning to leave, ESPN reported Friday.

Aztecs officials gave the league written notice this week that the school “intends to resign” from the MWC.

The withdrawal letter was dated June 13 from the office of school president Adela de la Torre, per the report.

SDSU needs to give the league one year’s notice in order to withdraw next June.

If it waits beyond June 30, the exit fee jumps from $16.5 million to nearly $34 million, per the report.

Although San Diego State has long been linked to the Pac-12, the report said there is no offer currently on the table from the Pac-12 or any other Power Five conference.

The program’s national profile reached a new peak in April when the Aztecs advanced to the NCAA Tournament championship game, losing to UConn.
