The Los Angeles Angels are certainly going full speed ahead in 2017. On the same day that they acquired Justin Upton, the Halos have traded for Atlanta Braves second baseman Brandon Phillips.

Phillips is certainly not the player that he was during his prime. Still, he represents a fairly significant upgrade for the Angels at the keystone.
Los Angeles’ second basemen have been among the worst in baseball throughout the year. Collectively, the Angels second basemen have 12 home runs, six steals, and a .196/.271/.318 slash line. Phillips, meanwhile, has 11 home runs, 10 steals, and is slashing a far more respectable .291/.329/.423.
The Angels are right in the thick of the American League Wild Card race. Los Angeles is off on Thursday but even following a win from the Minnesota Twins, is only 1.5 out of the second Wild Card spot in the American League.
