Redskins name team legend Doug Williams Senior Vice President of Player Development

Washington Redskins legend Doug Williams will remain an integral team executive after being announced as the Senior Vice President of Player Development on Thursday.

The Redskins announced the title on Twitter, noting Williams will report directly to head coach Ron Rivera.

Team owner Daniel Snyder shared his enthusiasm for the hire.

“Doug Williams is a legend within the Redskins franchise,” Snyder said, per the team’s website. “He is excited about this new role and in working with Coach Rivera. Doug is one of the most respected men in our building and I know that he will have an immediate impact on our players.”

Williams also chimed in with his thoughts on the position and opportunity.

“After meeting with Dan Snyder, Coach Rivera and Senior Director of Player Development Malcolm Blacken, we all came to an agreement on the vision that we have for the franchise going forward,” said Williams. “I am looking forward to this new opportunity to work with Malcolm and I have always respected his work during my time with the franchise. We both look forward to working with and supporting Coach Rivera in making sure that our players are prepared for life on and off the field.”

Williams is famous for leading Washington to a Super Bowl XXII victory that culminated with a 42-10 blowout over the Denver Broncos. Since his playing career ended at the end of the 1989 season, Williams has worked in NFL front offices and has been with Washington since being named a personnel executive in 2014.
