Rajon Rondo might be interested in playing for the New York Knicks — triangle offense notwithstanding — after all.
The point guard had previously said the triangle offense was “not really a good look for me,” but after a rough month with the Sacramento Kings it seems he’s changed his tune, via Ryan Lazo of the New York Post: “I had a comment earlier about it, but if I put my mind at it, I think I can be good at anything,” Rondo said.
He also discussed the allure of playing under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden on a regular basis:
“It’s one of those arenas,” Rondo said. “That’s the biggest lights. It’s Broadway. … Madison Square Garden is the mecca of basketball, so it’s always great going there and perform in front of a lot of fans.”
It certainly sounds like Rondo’s aversion to the triangle is wearing thin.
The point guard is in Sacramento on a one-year deal and will be an unrestricted free agent again after the season.
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has already made it known he’d love to have Rondo join him in New York. He said less than two weeks ago that Rondo would be “a perfect fit” in Phil Jackson’s triangle offense.
While there is no doubt Rondo would have plenty of work in front of him to become proficient running the triangle offense, his skill set could be quite dynamic in this system if he put his mind to it. His ability to drive into the lane and dish out would give the Knicks a dynamic aspect they’ve been missing for years.
Of course, New York won’t likely be the only team courting Rondo this upcoming offseason. Though at the age of 30, he still has plenty of mileage left in him and is still playing at an extremely high level. He leads the NBA right now, averaging 11.9 assists per game playing for the Kings.
