Pitt freshman Dior Johnson was suspended from the team indefinitely Friday after he was charged with assaulting a woman last month.

“University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball student-athlete Dior Johnson has been indefinitely suspended from all team activities pending the resolution of legal charges filed against him,” the program said in a statement. “The Pitt Athletic Department, which became aware of the charges Friday afternoon, will decline further comment until the legal process has reached a resolution.”

Johnson faces charges of aggravated and simple assault, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and strangulation.

The alleged victim gave police a written statement by email, saying Johnson slapped her across the face during an argument, left his apartment with her phone and came back at 4 a.m. to return it.

Their argument escalated, and he would not let her leave his apartment, the woman alleges. She also said he “got violent and repeatedly punched (her) in her arms, stomach and head multiple times.” When she tried to call 911, Johnson allegedly ran after her with scissors.

The woman eventually made it to a hospital for treatment, and police said she was treated for a concussion there, per her discharge report.

Johnson, a four-star recruit, joined Pitt’s Class of 2022 in June after previously committing to and decommitting from Syracuse and Oregon.
