The New England Patriots released quarterback Malik Cunningham on Tuesday, 10 days after signing the rookie from the practice squad to a three-year contract.

Cunningham, who joined New England as an undrafted free agent out of Louisville, was signed before the Patriots’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders two weeks ago. Rather than a practice squad promotion for gameday, they inked him to a three-year deal.

Now Cunningham is a free agent, though he could return to the Patriots’ practice squad if he clears waivers.

Cunningham, 25, played six snaps against the Raiders, four at wide receiver and two at quarterback. He took one sack in the 21-17 loss. He was then a healthy scratch for this Sunday’s 29-25 win over the Bills.

The Patriots also released defensive lineman Trey Flowers, 30, who had been on the physically unable to perform list (foot) since Aug. 30. Flowers, who spent his first four NFL seasons (2015-18) with New England, has not played since Oct. 16, 2022, for the Miami Dolphins.
