Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs down the field on a 75-yard game-winning touchdown drive in overtime to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Kansas City found itself down 22-19 after Brock Purdy led the 49ers down the field for three to open the extra stanza.

The pressure was squarely on Mahomes and Co. He aced it with flying colors, leading the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowl titles while etching his name in stone as one of the greatest to ever do it.

But in an alternate reality, how would things have changed if San Francisco opened overtime with a touchdown? Would have Kansas City kicked the extra point to force double overtime? Would they have gone for two and the win?

One day after his heroic performance, Mahomes is opening up about what the Chiefs’ plans were in overtime. He told SportsCenter on Monday that Kansas City would have gone for two.

“I don’t know if Coach Reid wants me telling everybody, but we would’ve went for two for sure,” Patrick Mahomes on Super Bowl game plan.

Imagine the scene inside Allegiant Stadium if it would’ve come down to one play from the two-yard line. Mahomes and his Chiefs looking to create the NFL’s latest dynasty. San Francisco attempting to win its sixth Lombardi.

Alas, it was not to be.

As for the game itself, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is under fire for deciding to receive the ball to open overtime. It represented the first postseason game with new overtime rules that allows both teams to possess the ball even if the first team scores a touchdown.

Some 49ers players were not aware of the new rules. Shanahan was. But he decided to take the ball instead of kicking off to Kansas City.

It’s a major storyline following the Chiefs’ dramatic overtime win in Las Vegas. That’s for sure.
