Parts of old Bay Bridge being used to make trophy for annual Giants vs. A’s series

Winning the annual Bay Bridge Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics will now come with a prize — a trophy made from part of the original Bay Bridge.

The trophy will be made by NBC Sports, which has broadcast rights for both team’s games.

Depending on the year, the Giants and A’s play either four or six games against each other in each regular season. Since Interleague Play began in 1997, the season series has finished tied in 10 of the 21 years, including 2017. In the remaining years, Oakland has a 7-4 lead on its cross bay rival, including a 3-1 win in 2016.

The new Bay Bridge was built in 2013 after years of construction. The old bridge was was damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, which occurred minutes before Game 3 of the 1989 World Series. A series that matched up these Bay Area’s two teams — which was eventually won by the A’s in a sweep.
