NFL insiders expect Kirk Cousins to sign with Vikings

One of the hottest up and coming NFL free agents, Kirk Cousins celebrates during the Redskins-Seahawks game

One of the more interesting names in the 2018 free agent class is quarterback Kirk Cousins. A number of teams are interested in the soon to be former Washington Redskins quarterback.

But despite rumored interest from the Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, and other teams, people inside the NFL expect to see Cousins with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018.

“Several agents who don’t represent Cousins but who have knowledge of the upcoming market for quarterbacks said they consider the Vikings the favorite to sign Cousins, who’s eligible for unrestricted free agency after three straight 4,000-yard passing seasons for the Washington Redskins,” Mark Maske of The Washington Post reported. “An executive with one NFL team expected to be in the market for a quarterback said he also expects Cousins to pick the Vikings.”

On the field, it would make sense that Cousins would want to end up in Minnesota. The Vikings were only one game away from the Super Bowl in 2017. So, if the plan is to go to a winner, it’s hard to beat that idea.

But that’s not the only consideration. If Minnesota is going to keep it’s core together, it can’t offer the kind of money that the New York Jets can. Additionally, the Vikings reached the NFC Championship Game with a stellar season from Case Keenum. Keenum is also a free agent. But given that he’d likely be much cheaper than Cousins, that has to be a consideration.

That said, if Minnesota can make it work, it would be darn interesting to see. Over the last three seasons, Cousins has completed 67 percent of his passes for 13,176 yards with 81 touchdowns, 36 picks, and a 97.5 passer rating. It would be fun to see what he could do for a team so close to Super Bowl caliber.
