NFL executive: Expect an ‘onslaught’ of trades, including ‘marquee’ players

The Seattle Seahawks made news on Wednesday by reportedly sending Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Bennett to the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. There’s also reports surfacing that Richard Sherman is on his way out of town.

This might be the first big day of news heading into free agency, but we can expect a ton of movement and rumors in the coming days.  Previous reports suggested that the trade market will be extremely active around the NFL once free agency opens a week from Wednesday.

Now, according to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo! Sports, at least one NFL executive believes that there is going to be an “onslaught” of trades, including deals with “marquee” players.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.

Seven teams currently have north of $60 million in cap room. Two teams are over the cap. Meanwhile, a total of 10 teams are $20 million or less under the cap. This type of economic situation usually leads to a ton of trades in an NFL where trades themselves have become more common in recent years.

Among the names bandied about outside of Seattle, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry, reigning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles of the above-mentioned Eagles and Denver Broncos Pro Bowl corner Aqib Talib have been mentioned the most.

We can expect a ton of trades to be announced once the new NFL year opens up a week from Wednesday.
