New York Yankees reportedly failed at rare trade with New York Mets before Aug. 1 trade deadline

The New York Yankees reportedly attempted to make a rare trade with crosstown rivals the New York Mets this week, however, they were surprisingly outbid by the Miami Marlins.

Despite being in different leagues, the New York Yankees’ rivalry with the New York Mets is one of the most notable in MLB. Their yearly subway series was the highlight of the early years of interleague play. They have faced off in the World Series. And their devoted and diehard fanbases make their matchups each season one of the biggest stories in New York sports every summer.

However, despite their ongoing feud, sometimes doing what is good for business supersedes whatever issues they may have and on occasion, the two clubs actually have worked together on trades. During the New York Mets’ 51 years in the league, they have reached a deal to swap players with the New York Yankees on 16 instances, and trade number 17 was reportedly at one point being negotiated this week.

On Friday, SNY MLB insider Andy Martino revealed that “the Yankees were among the teams talking to the Mets about David Robertson,” before he was shipped off the Miami Marlins in a surprise swap between division rivals on Thursday night.

  • David Robertson: 40 G, 2.05 ERA, 1.000 WHIP, 48 SO, 44.0 IP

Over the players the Mets are likely to move ahead of the Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline, Robertson made a great deal of sense for the Yankees. The organization is always looking to bolster their bullpen for the stretch run and the playoffs and Robertson would have been a nice addition after a strong showing in his lone season in Flushing.

However, the move is even more fitting because the 38-year-old is one of the New York Yankees’ best relievers of the last two decades. Robertson has had two previous stints with the pinstripes. The first was from 2008 to 2014 and included his lone trip to the All-Star game. Then he reunited with the franchise in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Robertson has posted one of the best ERAs of his career (2.05) during 40 appearances for the Mets and also racked up 14 saves.
