The New York Rangers placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on unconditional waivers Friday for the purpose of buying out his contract.

DeAngelo, 25, signed a two-year, $9.6 million contract extension in October 2020. However, he played in only six games last season before being involved in a reported altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

He last played for the Rangers on Jan. 30 and was waived the following day. DeAngelo cleared waivers that time, but then-general manager Jeff Gordon said he would not play for the team again.

The buyout is for one-third of the remaining contract because DeAngelo is younger than 26. The Rangers will pay him $883,334 in each of the next two seasons while carrying cap hits of $383,334 in 2021-22 and $883,334 in 2022-23, according to Cap Friendly.

Once he clears waivers, DeAngelo will become an unrestricted free agent.

DeAngelo scored 53 points (15 goals, 38 assists) in 68 games during his first season with the Rangers in 2019-20. He was New York’s first defenseman with at least 50 points in a season since Hall of Famer Brian Leetch in 2001-02.

DeAngelo has 106 points (24 goals, 82 assists) in 206 career games with the Arizona Coyotes and Rangers. He was dealt to New York as part of a June 2017 trade that shipped Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta to Arizona.

He was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 19th overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft.
