New York Jets and Green Bay Packers reportedly restart trade talks days before NFL Draft

After a couple of weeks with little to no dialogue, it seems the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers have rekindled Aaron Rodgers trades talks just in time for the NFL Draft this week.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest storylines in the NFL this offseason centers on what’s next for future Hall-of-Famer Aaron Rodgers. Following a disappointing Week 18 defeat to the Detroit Lions, his future in Green Bay immediately became a source of discussion.

After a few weeks of speculation, it was made clear the Green Bay Packers were ready to move on and the superstar quarterback wanted to continue his career as a member of the New York Jets. Unfortunately, the process to get Rodgers to Gotham for 2023 has been far slower than many expected.

Both sides want to get a trade done and there seems to be a general structure of a deal but one of the key elements that neither the New York Jets nor the Packers can seem to agree on is compensation that includes notable picks from this week’s event. Green Bay reportedly believes they deserve a good return for a four-time NFL MVP while the Jets don’t want to part with their top picks in the NFL Draft.

New York Jets record (2022): 7-10, last place in AFC East

It has led to a stalemate with both organizations digging in on what they feel is fair in a potential trade. Last week it was reported that both sides have hardly spoken in recent weeks, however, it seems that has changed with the draft set to begin on Thursday.

NFL Media league insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers have “re-engaged” in trade talks. He also noted that “A deal is not imminent, but the two sides are at least talking — with hopes a deal can (finally) be done this week.”

With a lot of debate on the strength of this year’s NFL Draft class, especially among the players projected to be taken in the first round, it is possible that after going through the process of evaluating the top athletes in this year’s class, the Jets may have found enough reason to part with their selection at 13 in the opening round.
