‘Momentum’ behind Sacramento Kings signing best big man in NBA free agency

There is reportedly some momentum building behind the idea that the Sacramento Kings could land the top forward in the 2023 class of NBA free agency.

The Sacramento Kings had a fantastic season in 2022-2023. They were the best story in the league as they stormed to the Pacific Division title and won their most games in nearly 20 years. Sure, they were ousted in the opening round by the Golden State Warriors, but there was little shame in it as they forced the defending champions to seven games.

After being in the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2006, most Sacramento Kings fans would just be happy with some consistency and a return to the postseason next season. However, the organization seems to be maneuvering toward taking another big step forward and that boost may come from the NBA free-agent market.

During the NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings traded their selection in the first round to the Dallas Mavericks in a move that gave them even more available salary cap space to take into the NBA free agent market and make a big splash. Well, it seems like there might be a specific player they could be targeting in this year’s pool.

On Tuesday, Yahoo Sports NBA insider Jake Fischer ran down some of the rumblings from around the league ahead of the official start of free agency on Friday. In the piece, Fischer revealed that “the name that’s gained plenty of momentum as a potential Sacramento target is Kuzma.”

What makes it all the more interesting is that he notes even after an extension for Domantas Sabonis and bringing back Trey Lyles, the Sacramento Kings should still have around $25 million to use on NBA free agents. The team allegedly had an interest in Kyle Kuzma two summers ago before the Lakers dealt him to Washington for Russell Westbrook.

A frontcourt of Sabonis and Kuzma — two 20-point scorers — could be quite formidable next season.
