In what can’t be classified as a shocker, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman is reporting that MLB is investigating the Chicago Cubs for tampering with former Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon.
The team hired Maddon away from Tampa Bay after he opted out of his contract with the Rays. Once Maddon became a “free agent,” it was rather obvious that both the manager and the Cubs had mutual interest in one another.
The issue here is that Tampa Bay is claiming that Maddon only opted out of his contract after he was made aware of the Cubs interest in him.
Tampa Bay then requested that MLB investigate the Cubs for tampering, which it is apparently now doing.
If these allegations are proven true, Chicago would have to give the Rays some sort of compensation. That would come in the form of either a player, draft picks or cash considerations.
