Miami Heat linked to potential pursuit of top big man left in NBA free agency

The Miami Heat reportedly could soon pursue the best big man left in NBA free agency.

While many contending teams like the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors have made notable moves this summer, the Miami Heat have been relatively quiet. Sure, they are the front-runner in a potential Damian Lillard trade, but they have not made the splash fans may have hoped for.

Without a doubt, Miami is one of the elite teams in the NBA, but after back-to-back trips to the Eastern Conference Finals, and coming up short in the championship series this spring, the Heat clearly need another major piece or a couple of impact additions that can help take them over the top in their pursuit of the franchise’s fourth title.

All of the top players in NBA free agency came off the board over a month ago, however, there are still a few that can be difference makers on a contending team. One such talent that is still up for grabs is seven-year veteran Christian Wood.

In recent weeks, the skilled big man has been linked to the Lakers, however, on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported that “Sources believe that the Miami Heat could be a suitor for Wood.” However, they also added one important caveat to the rumors, and that is a potential pursuit of Wood wouldn’t come until a trade for Damian Lillard is finalized.

Wood would slot in nicely next to center Bam Adebayo and force Kevin Love back to the bench where he is a better fit at this point in his career.

  • Christian Wood stats (’22-’23): 16.6 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.8 APG, 1.1 SPG, 38% 3PT

The 27-year-old put up very solid numbers for the Dallas Mavericks last season. Posting over 16 points, 7.3 rebounds, and a block a game in 2022-2023. His best season as a pro came three years ago with Houston when he averaged over 21 points and just under 10 rebounds per game.
