The New York Mets announced their coaching staff under new manager Carlos Mendoza on Monday, including the retention of pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and the hire of former big league manager John Gibbons as bench coach.

Gibbons went 793-789 in two stints as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays (2004-08; 2013-18).

Hefner returns for his fifth season as pitching coach for the Mets. He’ll be working for his third different manager in that span.

Mendoza also brought back coaches Glenn Sherlock (catchers), Eric Chavez, Jeremy Barnes (hitting) and Danny Barnes (strategy). Chavez was the bench coach last season for Buck Showalter but will return as hitting coach, the same role he had in 2022.

Antoan Richardson joins the Mets staff as first base coach, Jose Rosado will be the team’s bullpen coach, and Mike Sarbaugh comes over from Cleveland as third base coach. Sarbaugh had been with the Indians/Guardians organization since 1995 in myriad roles.

The Mets hired Mendoza last month to replace Showalter. Mendoza, 43, had been with the New York Yankees since 2009, most recently serving as the bench coach.

The hire was the first big move for new president of baseball operations David Stearns.
