Mikey Williams, a five-star signee in Memphis basketball’s 2023 class, was released on $50,000 bail Friday morning following his arrest on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
CBS 8 in San Diego reported that Williams, who played at San Ysidro High School in the area, was taken into custody by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in the unincorporated community of Jamul on Thursday afternoon.
He was booked on five counts of assault with a deadly weapon using a firearm.
The 247Sports composite lists Williams as the No. 6 combo guard and No. 26 overall player in the 2023 class. He signed his letter of intent to play for coach Penny Hardaway and the Tigers in November.
“We are aware of the situation and are gathering more information,” the university said in a prepared statement.
Williams has the highest ranking of the five incoming freshmen in the Memphis class, which is ranked No. 7 in the nation by the 247Sports composite.
Williams is due back in court on April 20.
