Markelle Fultz favored to go No. 1 overall to Celtics

Markelle Fultz

The Boston Celtics may be in the midst of a disastrous Eastern Conference Finals series against the superior Cleveland Cavaliers. That was evidenced in the team’s humiliating 44-point loss at home against Cleveland in Game 2 Friday night.

To add injury to insult (literally), star guard Isaiah Thomas suffered a hip injury and could miss the remainder fo the series.

Though, Boston did get some good news this past week. The team earned the No. 1 pick in this year’s NBA Draft after the balls bounced in its direction during the annual lottery on Tuesday. This pick comes via Brooklyn.

While most of the focus has been on former UCLA standout Lonzo Ball (and his father), Washington product Markelle Fultz might end up going No. 1 overall to Boston.

If you ask the fine people over at MyTopSportsbooks.com, Fultz is actually favored to be picked by Boston with the first pick. Here are the odds for that selection as of right now.

Markelle Fultz (Washington): 1/4
Lonzo Ball (UCLA): 9/1
Josh Jackson (Kansas): 9/1

Fultz averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game as freshman for Washington last season. He also shot 48 percent from the field, including a 41 percent mark from three-point range.

Fultz played point guard for the Huskies, a position that’s currently manned by Thomas in Boston. Though, there’s definitely a scenario here that suggests he could move to the off-guard position in the NBA.

It will surely be interesting to see how all this shakes out once the draft comes calling next month.
