Mackenzie McDonald ousts Taylor Fritz in Eastbourne

Mackenzie McDonald knocked out No. 1 seed and defending champion Taylor Fritz in an all-American clash at the Rothesay International on Wednesday in Eastbourne, Great Britain.

McDonald was down a break in both sets in his 7-6 (3), 7-6 (8) second-round win at the ATP 250 grass-court event. He saved six of eight break points and withstood 12 aces by Fritz in the 2-hour, 21-minute victory.

McDonald’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, a 6-2, 6-4 winner against England’s Liam Broady.

No. 2 seed Tommy Paul advanced to the final eight with a 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez. No 4 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina edged Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) and No. 8 Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia defeated Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Frenchman Gregoire Barrere posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 upset of No. 5 seed Nicolas Jarry of Chile, and China’s Zhizhen Zhang rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win against Maxime Cressy.
