Lawrence Taylor’s mini Lombardi Trophy for sale at auction

By Jesse Reed

The miniature Lombardi Trophy given to Lawrence Taylor after he helped the New York Giants win Super Bowl XXV is up for auction.

According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, the six-pound trophy, signed by Taylor, received an initial bid of $15,000. Goldin Auctions is the sports memorabilia company putting the trophy up for auction.

“The estimate for the trophy, by the time the auction closes on May 20, is at least $60,000, which is what the trophy given to Ottis Anderson, the MVP from that game, sold for at auction last year.”

Interestingly, Taylor is not the cosignor, which brings to memory his Super Bowl ring from Super Bowl XXV, which sold for over $230,000 with his son as the cosignor. ESPN phoned Taylor’s agent, Mark Lepselter, about this but did not have its call returned.

This trophy was given to Taylor after he earned MVP honors to help New York defeat the Buffalo Bills by the score of 20-19 in a game that will always be remembered for Scott Norwood’s potential game-winning field goal, which he shanked to the left of the goal posts.
