The Kontinental Hockey League in Russia is canceling the remainder of its regular season and will move straight to the playoffs following the conclusion of the Winter Olympics, the league announced Saturday.

The league is on pause for the Games. A league statement said 120 players from 22 KHL clubs are playing for 10 national teams in Beijing.

The KHL cited the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the reasons for the decision, which will allow players to quarantine before the start of the postseason.

The Gagarin Cup playoffs will begin March 1, the KHL said.
