Keshon Gilbert poured in a career-high-tying 25 points and Robert Jones added a season-high 18 on 6-of-6 shooting from the field as Iowa State cruised to a 90-65 win over visiting Iowa in the Cy-Hawk rivalry Thursday night in Ames, Iowa.

Tre King added 17 points and Tamin Lipsey scored 11 as the Cyclones (7-2) won their 23rd consecutive nonconference game at home.

Iowa (5-4) dropped its second in a row despite Payton Sandfort (14), DaSonte Bowen (13) and Owen Freeman (11) all scoring in double figures.

Iowa was hoping for its first win in Ames since 2019 but Iowa State owned a 46-18 advantage in the paint and held one of the nation’s best offensive teams more than 20 points below its average (87.5).

Sandfort kept Iowa hanging around early on, hitting four first-half 3-pointers.

The Cyclones stretched their lead to double digits when Jackson Paveletzke hit a jumper in the lane for a 22-12 lead with 11:06 to play.

Two free throws by Brock Harding got the Iowa deficit to 29-18 with 6:06 to play but the Cyclones responded with a 3-pointer from Gilbert.

It was all Iowa State from there. Milan Momcilovic buried a 3-pointer in the corner with 3:19 left that stretched the lead to 42-24 and the Cyclones went into halftime with a 47-29 cushion.

It was a half that couldn’t end soon enough for Iowa, which had more turnovers (12) than field goals (9) in the first 20 minutes.

Iowa State stretched its lead to 62-35 by the first media timeout of the second half after Lipsey stole the ball and dished it to Gilbert, who drilled an open 3-pointer from up top.

Iowa State won for just the 29th time in the all-time series against their in-state rival. Iowa still leads the series 48-29.
