Kario Oquendo, Georgia too strong for East Tennessee State

Kario Oquendo scored 16 points to help Georgia pull away in the second half for a 62-47 victory over visiting East Tennessee State on Sunday in Athens, Ga.

Oquendo made 6 of 11 shots from the floor — including 4 for 8 from 3-point range — while Justin Hill added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists for Georgia. Terry Roberts added 12 points and a game-high six rebounds and six assists.

The Bulldogs (5-2), who outscored East Tennessee State 32-21 in the second half, shot 24 for 57 from the floor (42.1 percent), including 9 for 30 from 3-point range (30.0 percent). They also enjoyed a 38-28 edge in rebounds.

East Tennessee State (3-4) was led by Jalen Haynes, who had 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting and three rebounds. Jordan King added 14 points and five rebounds, while Jaden Seymour had six points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Buccaneers made 20 of 51 shots from the field (39.2 percent) — including an abysmal 2 of 16 from beyond the arc (12.5 percent). They also committed 17 turnovers that the Bulldogs converted into 21 points.

After the Buccaneers tied the game at 36-36 on Josh Taylor’s layup with 15:38 left, the Bulldogs hit three 3-pointers during a 12-0 run. They didn’t relinquish that lead.

Georgia didn’t lead by fewer than nine the rest of the way.

After Oquendo hit consecutive 3-pointers for a 25-15 lead with 5:33 left, the Buccaneers chipped away and pulled to within 30-26 at halftime.

Oquendo and Roberts carried the Bulldogs in the first half, scoring 11 and nine points, respectively. Georgia made 12 of 29 shots from the floor (41.4 percent), including 5 of 16 from beyond the arc (31.3 percent).

East Tennessee State was led by Haynes, whose 12 points accounted for nearly half of the Buccaneers’ first-half scoring. Haynes made 6 of 7 shots from the floor in the first 20 minutes, with his teammates going 6 of 21 from the floor.
