Kansas Jayhawks upset Oklahoma Sooners, fans dump field goal post in a lake to celebrate

The Oklahoma Sooners came into Saturday’s matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks as one of eight undefeated teams at the FBS level, ranked sixth in the nation. But the Jayhawks, who came into the day at 5-2, made sure Kansas wouldn’t be overlooked.

Getting out to a 14-0 start with 14 minutes left in the second quarter, it was obvious the Jayhawks were prepared to give their Big 12 rivals everything they could handle from the very start.

But Dillon Gabriel and the Sooners rallied back, scoring 21 points in the second quarter, taking a 21-17 lead into halftime. Yet, Kansas wasn’t about to give in easily, scoring 12 points in the final frame. This included the go-ahead touchdown with just 55 seconds remaining to win 38-33.

It was a massive win for the Kansas football program, as the win over Oklahoma was their first against the Sooners in 26 years, their first win against a top-10 team in 16 years, and their first home win against a top-10 team in 39 years.

It turns out there was only one way the Jayhawks fans wanted to celebrate the victory: by tearing down the goalpost after the final whistle.

That’s fun, but what does one do with a goalpost after it’s no longer at home where it belongs on a football field? Kansas fans decided to toss it in a lake, which is obviously not the rightful place for this item.

In the end, the joke’s on them, as the game was played at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, meaning the Jayhawks fans tore down their own team’s field goal posts.

If you’re wondering, yes, the Jayhawks do have another game next week. Thankfully for the unlucky staff in charge of the Kansas football stadium, the Jayhawks will be on the road taking on Iowa State on Nov. 4.

However, the Jayhawks do return home to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to face Texas Tech on Nov. 11. Hopefully both teams have goalposts by then.
