Jason Garrett: Cowboys offense coming to Matt Cassel quickly

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett

The Dallas Cowboys traded for Matt Cassel out of necessity when Tony Romo sustained an injury, but head coach Jason Garrett is pleased with how quickly the offense is coming to the veteran quarterback.

According to Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News, Garrett said he’s been quizzing the veteran gunslinger to see how much Cassel has learned.

“He can speak the language. He’s getting more and more comfortable saying it. He’s run a lot of these plays. He knows these concepts. As much as anything else, it’s learning the terminology and learning the nuances of the system.”

Garrett added that Cassel, who was inactive last week after being acquired from the Buffalo Bills, has worked with coaches in the two-minute drill.

Dallas likely hopes the 33-year-old continues soaking in the system, considering Kellen Moore was Brandon Weeden’s backup during the Cowboys loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Moore has never thrown a pass in his NFL career.

Cassel, on the other hand, was a full-time starter for three years. He also appeared in 30 games from 2011 to 2014.

Although Cassel isn’t a perfect answer, Dallas can’t be too pick because of Romo’s injury. The Cowboys need to make the best of a bad situation, and Cassel is one of the best replacement options.
