Instant Reaction: Raiders Sink Further Into Abyss

The Raiders again played sloppy and uninspired football in a 27-3 loss at Wembley Stadium in London and Raider Nation now has to turn the page and think more about a major rebuild in Oakland.

Problems are numerous and solutions are at a premium for the 2018 Raiders as they lose again – this time on a different continent – in a one-sided 27-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in London.

The Raiders were never in the game as Seattle marched 82 yards on 12 plays in 7:52 to take a 7-0 lead of the brow-beaten Raiders. The Seahawks had no need to pass the ball as the Raiders were unable to contain Seattle’s running game. The 3-3 Seahawks rushed for over 150 yards on the day and all-everything quarterback Russell Wilson went 17-of-23 for 222 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.

Seattle’s balanced approach to offense – 37 times on the ground vs. 23 in the air – overwhelmed Oakland from the get-go.

Derek Carr appeared to be injured late in the Seattle loss.

The Raiders were hurt significantly by their banged-up offensive line as quarterback Derek Carr was sacked six times, including the last sack where he appeared to injure his left arm. Carr had another forgettable day finishing 23-of-41 for 142 yards. Carr did not turn the ball over against Seattle. Carr rarely threw the ball over five yards with most of his completions coming on very short pass plays. Running back Marshawn Lynch carried the ball 13 times for 45 yards but wasn’t a factor overall.

It was, again, the Raiders defense and their inability to shut down the offense that contributed greatly to the loss. Seattle converted on 69% of its third downs compared to just 33% for the Raiders. Oakland’s defense yielded 6-yards per play and a total of 369 yards for the day. Long plays and big third-down conversions were again a problem for Guenther’s defense. The Seahawks just flat-out beat the Raiders physically.

The Raiders were also hurt again by turnovers and moved to +6 in turnovers with two fumbles in Sunday’s loss.

The Raiders move to 1-5 overall heading into their bye week looking for healthy bodies and answers to the riddle that is the 2018 season.
