The Pittsburgh Pirates extended the contract of manager Derek Shelton, general manager Ben Cherington told reporters on Saturday afternoon.

Cherington declined to reveal terms of the extension.

“I am very excited to have a chance to continue to work with him,” Cherington said. “I really believe that he’s the right person for the job. He’s worked tirelessly for over three years now to help put us in a stronger position to win.”

The Pirates are one of the biggest surprises in the majors this season with a 14-7 record entering Saturday’s home game against the Cincinnati Reds. They have won their last five games.

This is Shelton’s fourth season at the helm of the Pirates, who are coming off consecutive 100-loss seasons.

Shelton, 52, has a 156-249 career mark entering Saturday’s game.
