Green Bay Packers sign new quarterback heading into training camp

For the first time since 1992, Green Bay Packers training camp will start without Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback.

As astonishing as this might be, former first-round pick Jordan Love will be Green Bay’s QB1 after the blockbuster trade of Rodgers to the New York Jets.

This doesn’t mean that the Packers’ depth chart at quarterback is settled. They just signed reigning USFL MVP Alex McGough to the 90-man roster, via Aaron Wilson of KPRC.

McGough, 27, led Birmingham to a second consecutive USFL title this past season, throwing for 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns during the spring. A product of Florida International, he has spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans without playing a single NFL snap.

This is more than merely a depth move on the Packers’ part. They currently have former fifth-round picks Sean Clifford and Danny Etling backing Love up heading into camp. Most figured that the Packers would add a veteran arm with experience given that those two have yet to throw a regular season pass in their careers.

Given the lack of experience behind Love on Green Bay’s depth chart, it would not be a surprise if McGough made the Packers’ 53-man roster out of camp. He’ll be given reps during camp and the preseason. That’s for sure.

As for the Packers’ overall quarterback situation, Love has thrown all of 83 regular season passes since Green Bay made him a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In reality, that decision expedited Rodgers’ departure from the organization.

There is also a chance that Green Bay looks at a veteran moving forward on the summer. It has been linked to two San Francisco 49ers backups in that of Sam Darnold and Trey Lance.

For now, McGough will get a chance to prove himself during training camp.
