Free agent WR Victor Cruz reportedly set to meet with the Bears

Former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is set to meet with the Chicago Bears on Monday, according to Kim Jones of NFL Network. Cruz is also scheduled to meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars on May 23 (more on that here).

With the free agent market dwindling, Cruz is finally getting some suitors, but these are slim pickings for someone considered to be the cream of the crop just a few years ago.

After missing 10 games in 2014 and the entire 2015 season due to injury, Cruz returned last season and was generally anonymous in the Giants’ offense. He caught just 39 balls on 72 targets for a career-low 586 yards (not counting 2014, when he played just six games) and was the third wheel of the receiving corps behind Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard.

Even with Alshon Jeffery gone, Cruz still may be third or fourth on Chicago’s wide receiver depth chart, should he sign there. Cameron Meredith and Markus Wheaton both did more than Cruz in 2016 and if Kevin White is healthy, he’ll be Mike Glennon’s first option. There’s also Deonte Thompson and Kendall Wright to contend with, not to mention Cruz’s former Giants teammate Rueben Randle. If the Bears sign Cruz, it wouldn’t be surprising if it were to compete for a roster spot in training camp.
