Bills GM: Frank Gore will push LeSean McCoy for starting job

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane made a pretty surprising statement on Wednesday about an upcoming battle between Frank Gore and LeSean McCoy.

Speaking on 1270 The Fan, the GM made it clear that Gore has a chance to beat out McCoy for the starting running back job.

On the surface, that’s a pretty stunning statement considering Gore is 35 years of age.

Yet, when we think about just how poorly McCoy played last year — granted, he was banged up and played behind an awful offensive line — it makes sense. He averaged a paltry 3.2 yards per carry and scored just three touchdowns in 14 games.

When Gore was healthy last season in Miami, he was tremendous rushing the ball (4.6 yards per carry). In addition to his continued prowess as a runner, Gore is perhaps the best running back in the NFL when it comes to pass protection. He’s a valuable asset to be sure.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how this pending competition plays out.
