Duke leading scorer Kyle Filipowski will undergo an MRI on the ankle he injured during a controversial play at the end of regulation in Saturday’s loss to Virginia.

“We don’t know his status yet,” Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer said Monday on the ACC coaches call. “He’s getting treatment this morning, he’ll get an MRI, but we don’t know yet.”

The freshman center was injured with the score tied at 58-58 and 1.2 seconds remaining in the second half. Filipowski drove to the basket and attempted a contested finish over Virginia’s Reece Beekman and Ryan Dunn.

A foul was called on the play but then rescinded when the game officials ruled — incorrectly — that the foul occurred after the clock reach 0.0. The ACC ruled later that day that Filipowski should have been granted free throws.

Scheyer was still in a sour mood Monday over the gaffe and his team’s 69-62 overtime loss.

“For me, I’m angry still,” Scheyer said Monday. “I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t. Saturday was a disappointing outcome. Of course all of us saw the ACC’s release and I respect them for putting it out, I respect them for acknowledging it, and obviously doesn’t change the outcome that our guys didn’t get the opportunity to earn a win.”

“So for me, it’s not OK,” Scheyer added.

Filipowski, who averages a team-best 14.8 points per game, was held scoreless on 0-for-6 shooting with five turnovers in 30 minutes of playing time on Saturday. He’s shooting 75.8 percent from the foul line.

Duke hosts Notre Dame on Tuesday.
