Dawson Garcia announced Monday that he will transfer to Minnesota after spending last season at North Carolina.

Garcia is from Prior Lake, Minn., about 30 miles from the Golden Gophers’ campus. Minnesota will be his third school after he played his freshman season at Marquette before transferring to North Carolina.

Garcia left the Tar Heels in the middle of last season because of family medical issues.

“I just chose Minnesota because I’m close to my family and my friends and my support group,” Garcia said to 247Sports. “I’m just excited to have a chance to play basketball around my loved ones. It means the world. I’m filled with so much excitement and gratitude.”

In 16 games last season, Garcia averaged 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He averaged 13.0 points and 6.6 boards at Marquette in 2020-21.
