As the Chicago Cubs gear up for a critical stretch in September, they’ll now have to do it without outfielder Jason Heyward for some time.
On Friday, Chicago placed its right fielder on the 10-day disabled list with tightness in his right hamstring. In a corresponding move, the Cubs called up right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples.

Heyward suffered the tightness in his right hamstring during Thursday’s game and Chicago acted promptly by putting him on the disabled list.
Given the nature of the injury, Heyward could miss multiple weeks of action as the Cubs try and avoid any further setbacks during a potential postseason run.
While Heyward is sidelined, it’s likely that Chicago will use Ben Zobrist and Ian Happ more frequently in the outfield. The Cubs will also have even more options when rosters expand on Saturday thanks to expanded September rosters.
