After spending a season as an unpaid intern at Clemson, former Tigers running back C.J. Spiller has been hired as an assistant coach.
Spiller, who rushed for 3,547 yards and 32 touchdowns during his time with the Tigers (2006-09), will coach the running backs.

“To have C.J. out on the road recruiting and have him leading these young men day in and day out is something I’m really, really excited about, and I can’t wait to see him take the field this spring leading that group,” said Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.
Spiller’s final season at Clemson overlapped with Swinney’s first full season at the helm.

“It doesn’t happen very often that you’re able to coach at your alma mater, especially in your first gig, and for me to have that opportunity, I don’t take it lightly,” said Spiller, 33. “I’m just ecstatic about getting started.”
The ninth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Spiller rushed for 3,451 yards and 12 touchdowns in 90 games with the Buffalo Bills (2010-14), New Orleans Saints (2015), New York Jets (2016), Seattle Seahawks (2016) and Kansas City Chiefs (2017). He made the Pro Bowl after rushing for 1,244 yards in 2012.

Clemson also gave offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, 41, a pay raise from $1.6 million to $2 million with a contract extension that runs through January 2026. Elliott also had assistant head coach and tight ends coach added to his duties.
