Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Chris Claybrooks arrested and charged with assault, vandalism

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Chris Claybrooks was arrested over the weekend in Nashville, Tennessee and is facing misdemeanor charges for domestic assault and vandalism.

According to court records for Davidson County, Tennessee, the 5-foot-9 defensive back was released on a $2,500 bond following his arrest in his hometown. The 24-year-old was accused of grabbing a cell phone from a woman’s hand and damaging it by throwing it to the ground, per Pro Football Talk.

Claybrooks was a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, taken with the 223rd overall selection out of Memphis. During his rookie season in Jacksonville, Claybrooks served as a return specialist and played 374 snaps at cornerback.

He was charged with domestic assault with bodily harm and vandalism under $1,000, misdemeanors in Tennessee. According to the affidavit, the woman accusing Claybrooks said she suffered bruises and abrasions on her hand.

Claybrooks played just 47 snaps defensively last season for Jacksonville, per Pro Football Reference. However, he is a core part of their special teams with 690 career snaps including 219 last season in 17 games.

“The Jaguars are aware of a recent incident in Nashville, Tennessee involving Chris Claybrooks and are currently in the process of gathering information. We will have no further comment at this time.”

After graduating from McGavock High School in Nashville, Tennessee, Claybrooks played at multiple colleges. He first played at Fort Scott Community College in 2016 then for Coahoma Community College in 2017. he later transferred to Memphis, playing two seasons for the Tigers.

Scheduled for a court date on May 1, the Jaguars could create $1.01 million in cap space if they chose to release Claybrooks following his arrest.
