Chicago Bears ‘in talks’ with free agent pass rushers, deal could happen soon

Chicago Bears training camp is imminent and while there’s plenty of excitement for the offense heading into 2023, Chicago could be on the verge of adding a pass rusher to help the defense.

The Bears had one of the worst NFL defenses in 2022. Chicago had the second-worst pressure rate (15.9 percent) and the lowest quarterback knockdown rate (4.2 percent) in the NFL. In addition, the Bears finished with just 20 sacks in 17 games, the fewest in the league.

While the lack of a consistent pass rush was a major weakness heading into the offseason, Chicago focused on improving at off-ball linebacker. Months later, it appears the front office is finally on the verge of creating a more effective pass rush.

According to ESPN’s David Kaplan, the Bears are in active talks with several free-agent edge rushers. Heading into training camp, Chicago is hoping to sign one pass rusher before practices begin.

Specific names weren’t provided, but there are several quality edge rushers still available in free agency. Yannick Ngakoue, Jadeveon Clowney, Justin Houston and Robert Quinn are all unsigned.

While Quinn is unlikely to return to Chicago, Clowney and Ngakoue could be options for the Bears. Ngakoue was credited with 16 quarterback hits and 9.5 sacks in 15 games last season with the Indianapolis Colts. While Clowney isn’t as effective as a pure pass rusher, he could be a three-down player for the Bears.

Bears’ training camp will begin on July 27. With players reporting in a matter of days and Chicago already engaged in negotiations with multiple players, a deal could happen before the end of next week.
