CFL team hires former Packers coach Mike Sherman

The fascinating coaching career of Mike Sherman is going international; the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League have hired the former NFL coach.

While Sherman is a recognizable name, he most recently coached at Nauset Regional High School in North Eastham, Massachusetts.

You could hardly make up Sherman’s coaching story.

After paying his dues rising the coaching ranks, Sherman spent six years leading the Green Bay Packers from 2000-2005. He compiled a 57-39 regular-season record, helping the Packers reach the playoffs four times while winning three division crowns.

However, Sherman was fired after a 4-12 season in 2005. He was the assistant head coach for the Houston Texans the next year before serving as the offensive coordinator in 2007. Then, he returned to the college game.

Sherman headed to Texas A&M, where he spent four years and managed a 25-25 record before getting fired. Since the Miami Dolphins selected his college quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, in the 2012 NFL draft, the franchise thought it fit to hire Sherman as the offensive coordinator. But he only lasted two years with the Dolphins.

Following a year away from the game, Sherman took over at Nauset. He was just 4-18 at the high school before resigning.

It’s fair to say Montreal is gambling with a coach who hasn’t enjoyed much success in the last decade, but the 63-year-old Sherman will be back on the sideline in 2018.
