The Canadian women’s hockey team captured the gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, courtesy of its 3-2 victory over rival United States on Thursday.

Marie-Philip Poulin collected two goals and an assist for Canada, which secured the gold for the fifth time since the event was added in 1998. It also avenged its loss to the United States in the gold-medal game in the 2018 PyeongChang Games.

Hilary Knight and Amanda Kessel each scored a goal for the Americans, who settled for silver despite outshooting Canada 40-21.

The United States also dropped a 4-2 decision to Canada in the preliminary round.

Also on Thursday, Russian skater Kamila Valieva fell twice during her free skate program and finished off the podium.

Valieva, 15, tested positive for banned heart drug trimetazidine in December but was cleared to compete Monday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Russians Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova won the gold and silver, respectively. Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto captured the bronze.

Valieva finished in fourth place, while Americans Alysa Liu and Mariah Bell ended up in seventh and 10th place, respectively.
