Browns QB Brock Osweiler: ‘I want to be the starter of this team’

Cleveland Browns QB Brock Osweiler wants to be the team's starter in 2017.

The Cleveland Browns will have a three-man competition for the starting quarterback job during training camp. This will include rookie second-round pick DeShone Kizer, fellow youngster Cody Kessler and off-season acquisition Brock Osweiler.

Most figure the Browns might want to go young under center with either Kizer or Kessler. After all, this is not a team that’s going to be in contention over the short term. Why not give the starter job to a young quarterback with upside?

Though, it now looks like Osweiler could very well be atop the heap at this early stage in the summer. It was previously noted that Cleveland has not ruled out starting the struggling veteran. Meanwhile, Osweiler himself had gone on record noting that the proof was in the film.

For his part, Osweiler is now claiming that he wants to be the Browns’ starter this upcoming season.

That’s not necessarily a huge surprise. Is any veteran quarterback going to publicly say that his goal is to be a backup? That’s only magnified with what appears to be a wide-open competition in Cleveland.

Osweiler may say the proof is in the film, but he was downright atrocious for the Houston Texans last season.

He put up 15 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions and was benched late in the season for Tom Savage before ultimately taking over the starting job when Savage himself went down to injury. He responded by putting up three interceptions in a playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

Osweiler has apparently looked good during off-season activities. But he’s going to actually have to prove himself on the field during games before people forget about last year’s ugly performance in Houston.
