Toronto Blue Jays infielders Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman both departed with injuries during Sunday’s 10-7, 11-inning loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
Bichette, the team’s shortstop, left with right quadriceps tightness. Third baseman Chapman exited with right middle finger inflammation.
Toronto manager John Schneider said Bichette was pulled after the fifth inning as a precaution. He said the two-time All-Star is day to day.
“He has been feeling it a little bit and has been playing through it,” Schneider said after the contest. “We just wanted to be careful. I don’t think he really hurt anything. It was more precaution than anything.”
Santiago Espinal replaced Bichette at shortstop.
Bichette missed 16 games earlier this month due to a knee injury.
Chapman has been dealing with finger soreness for a couple of weeks after jamming the finger during a weightlifting session. The three-time American League Gold Glover will undergo an MRI exam.
Chapman left the game in the sixth when Whit Merrifield batted for him. Cavan Biggio finished up at third base.
Bichette, 25, entered Sunday as the American League leader with 152 hits. He went 0-for-3 against the Guardians and is batting .314 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs in 114 games.
Chapman, 30, went 0-for-1 with a walk to drop his average to .248. He has 15 homers and 50 RBIs in 125 games.
The Blue Jays open a three-game series against the visiting Washington Nationals on Monday.
