Jenny Cavnar was named the lead play-by-play announcer for the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, making her the first woman in MLB history to be a team’s primary voice.

“It is a dream come true to join the broadcast team for the Oakland A’s and their rich baseball history,” Cavnar said in a statement. “Growing up the daughter of a baseball coach, I have loved the game from a young age, along with the stories, history and relationships the game provides.”

Cavnar will team with former MLB pitcher Dallas Braden on the team’s television broadcasts on NBC Sports California.

She replaces interim voices Johnny Doskow and Vince Cotroneo, who occupied the seat last season after Glen Kuiper was suspended and eventually fired for uttering a racial slur on the air during the A’s game against the Kansas City Royals on May 5.

While her hiring makes history, Cavnar is no stranger to the MLB broadcast booth.

An 20-year industry veteran, Cavnar spent the past 12 seasons covering the Colorado Rockies as their backup play-by-play announcer, pre- and postgame host, and regional reporter.

She was honored as Colorado Sportscaster of the Year in 2021 and has won five Emmy Awards.

“Jenny is a very talented announcer with significant experience covering baseball,” NBC Sports California and NBC Sports Bay Area president and general manager Matt Murphy said. “She’s been a groundbreaking professional who’s earned the admiration of fans and her peers throughout her career. We’re very excited for her to join our excellent team and lead our A’s coverage starting this season.”
