Anett Kontaveit rallies to capture St. Petersburg title

No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia rallied to defeat No. 1 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the final of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Kontaveit trailed 3-1 in the second set and 4-1 in the third set before completing her successful comeback in two hours, 57 minutes. It was her 20th consecutive win indoors and her sixth career title, with five coming in the past seven months.

Both players broke serve four times, both won 68 percent of their first-service points and both served three aces. Sakkari finished with a slight edge in total points, 124-121. Sakkari saved 10 break points and Kontaveit seven.

According to the WTA, the only other women with an indoor win streak of at least 20 consecutive wins since 1989 are Steffi Graf (43 in a row, 1989-90), Monica Seles (32, 1991-93), Lindsay Davenport (22, 2001-02), Justine Henin (22, 2007-10) and Jana Novotna (21, 1994).
