Phillies OF Odubel Herrera designated for assignment

Odubel Herrera

Odubel Herrera, a 2016 All-Star outfielder who appeared poised to be one of MLB’s brightest stars a few years ago, was designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

The move, which clears a roster spot for outfielder Nick Martini, comes six months after Herrera was suspended 85 games by MLB for violating the league’s joint domestic violence policy.

The 28-year-old outfielder made his MLB debut in 2015 and emerged as a key layer for the Phillies the following season. After making the All-Star team in 2016, Herrera posted a .281/.325/.452 slash line in 2017 before regressing in 2018 with a .255/.310/.420 line.

Herrera maintained his starting spot for the Phillies this past season and played in 39 games before his arrest after allegedly committing domestic violence in May.

MLB placed Herrera on administrative leave immediately until the league concluded its investigation. A decision was reached in July to suspend him for the remainder of the season,

Herrera, who signed a five-year, $30.5 million extension with Philadelphia in 2016, will likely need to find opportunities elsewhere if he wants to play baseball in 2020.
