Washington Redskins first-round rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins will have to wait his turn, as Case Keenum reportedly will be the starter.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media said Monday that the expectation is that Keenum will start due to Colt McCoy remaining sidelined due to his leg injury. On Tuesday, Rapoport doubled down, writing, “it’ll be Case Keenum to start, as Haskins waits.”
This outcome seemed the likeliest ever since the start of camp, when Haskins was listed as the third quarterback on the opening depth chart.
That said, the rookie out of Ohio State had a strong second preseason game after a two-interception debut that included a pick-six. Keenum, though, hasn’t been great so far this preseason, completing just 7-of-16 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.
What it looks like here is that head coach Jay Gruden is unwilling to let rookie mistakes doom his team right out of the gate. Based on the way Keenum played last year in Denver, and so far this preseason, Haskins may get his shot to play sooner rather than later.
