Legendary announcer Dave Johnson suing Amazon over ‘down the stretch they come’ catch phrase

Justify wins the Kentucky Derby

Legendary horse racing announcer Dave Johnson is suing corporate giant Amazon for selling T-shirts with his famous “down the stretch they come” catch phrase emblazoned on the front.

TMZ Sports shared this news on Tuesday. The site reports Johnson saying the shirt is a “‘tacky, low quality, over-priced’ item that’s tarnishing his good name.”

Per TMZ Sports, Johnson is seeking a halt to all sales of the shirt and wants all the shirts recalled and destroyed. Additionally, he is seeking all profits Amazon has made selling the shirt, along with damages.

Though Johnson is no longer the television announcer for the Triple Crown races, he still calls them on the radio. It’s notable that the timing of this lawsuit corresponds with Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
